1 Corinthians 15:58

"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”  1 Corinthians 15:58.  As defined by Webster's 1828 dictionary, stedfast is 1. Fast fixed; firm; firmly fixed or established; as the stedfast globe of earth.  2. Constant; firm; resolute; not fickle or wavering.

Paul concludes his first epistle to the Corinthians with this powerful verse of exhortation to be stedfast.  This verse is just as applicable today as it was in Paul’s time.  He knew that our adversary, the devil, will relentlessly use circumstances and people to discourage us and potentially cause us to exit the highway of holiness.  It is our choice to remain stedfast in our devotion to God and in our resolve to retain our salvation, regardless of circumstances and the actions of those around us.

It is encouraging to realize that every one of us can freely choose to be stedfast.  Being stedfast does not require any talent, beauty, popularity, or wealth.  Once we have received salvation, it is our choice to remain faithful to God through all of the ups and downs of life.  We are not forced to be stedfast, but we have access to an anchor (Hebrews 6:19) which will help keep us on the right path.  Stay connected to the anchor.

“We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.”
We Have An Anchor
By Priscilla J. Owens (1882)
