Antichrists, Anointing, and Abiding

(1 John 2:18-29)

Q1. (1 John 2:18) What is this antichrist that John refers to? In what ways do we see the spirit of antichrist at work in our day?

Q2. (1 John 2:20-21) What is the "anointing" that John is talking about? In what way is anointing connected to the Holy Spirit? Has every Christian received this anointing? What do you think?

Q3. (1 John 2:20, 27) In what ways is the Holy Spirit an internal Guide for us? In what ways does he teach us? In what ways does he point us to Jesus' teaching?

Q4. (1 John 2:24-28) What does it mean to abide/remain/continue in Jesus? Give an example of what a Christian might be doing who is "abiding" in Jesus. What are symptoms in a Christian who is not "abiding" in Jesus?

Q5. (1 John 2:26-27) If we have the Holy Spirit, why do we need teachers in the church? How does the role of the anointing differ from the Holy Spirit's spiritual gift of teaching?

Don't Love the World (1 John 2:7-17)

Q3. (1 John 2:15-16) What is "the world" in verses 15-16?  What kind of love of "the world" keeps us from loving the Father?

Q4. (1 John 2:15-17) What kinds of sins are covered by the three examples of worldliness that John gives?  Why are these sometimes so difficult for us to discern in ourselves?  Why is worldliness so harmful to our future?

Psalm 51:7 (KJV)

As we completely thaw out from our last bit of beautiful, white snow, I am reminded of the purity that comes when we turn our lives over to God.   When we ask for his divine forgiveness, God cleans out the old sins from our lives, preparing us for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Psalms 51:7 says, "Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow”

I am so thankful that God can take a life full of dark, sinful impurities and make it clean and beautiful.

Seeking God

Jeremiah 29:13 states, "And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart."

In Matthew 13:45-46 we read, "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it."

In today's world there are endless recommendations made by man for finding God. Over the years thousands of books, countless seminars and teachings, and a multitude ideas and approaches have been espoused. Even though man's ideas are complicated and diverse, the true approach to finding God is simple and unchanging. The bible clearly teaches that you must seek him with "all of our heart"!

Have a blessed week!

2 Corinthians 13:5 (KJV)

With the start of a brand new year, many folks are evaluating their lives and resolving to make improvements for 2016.  This evaluation is a healthy process if one is truly honest with themselves.  Whether these improvements are associated with diet, exercise, or setting a budget; this type evaluation can lead to improvements that can be life changing.

The Bible does teach us to examine ourselves, but in a little different way than looking at things from a physical viewpoint.  According to 2 Corinthians 13:5 we are to, "Examine ourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves.  Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?"   This single verse challenges us all to look within ourselves and to make sure Jesus Christ is abiding in our hearts in lives.  Another verse found in 2 Peter 1:10 says, "Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure:  for if you do these things, ye shall never fall."

I pray this week your New Year's resolutions start with the spiritual side of life and that you all will have a safe and Happy New Year!
